Power dressing has not kept up with powerful women.

The last widely recognized language of power dressing was built for another era. In 1977, John T. Molloy published The Woman’s Dress for Success Book, giving women a rulebook for navigating professional rooms that were still largely designed by and for men. By the 1980s, power dressing had become a visual code: structured suits, strong shoulders, and credibility translated through proximity to the masculine uniform.

The promise was simple: if a woman could make herself legible enough to institutions built by and for men, perhaps she would be allowed in.

Women now lead companies, allocate capital, make policy, shape culture, cross continents, sit on boards, walk red carpets, raise families, start over, fall in love, and occasionally do several of those things before Thursday.

Her life expanded. Her wardrobe fragmented.

Over the course of my career, I have invested more than $1.3 billion across private equity and venture capital funds. I have spent decades in rooms where women moved capital, institutions, and ideas. I have seen the old uniform up close. I have worn it.

What struck me was never that powerful women lacked clothing. They had plenty of clothing. They lacked a wardrobe equal to the range of the lives they had built. The fragmentation split her in two: clothes that made her serious but invisible, and clothes that made her visible but not serious.

A powerful woman should not need separate wardrobes for separate versions of herself.

That insight became Work-to-World: a new framework for dressing across the full range of a powerful woman's life.

Volume

Power dressing has spent fifty years teaching women to take up less space.

PRINCIPLE II

Color

There are occasions for beige. Camouflage comes to mind.
